The construction works for the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1), the underwater energy transmission connection between Scotland and England, have commenced at a special ceremony attended by representatives from the government and local authorities.

The project, costing £2.5 billion, is a joint venture between SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission, and it has already received approval from Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator.

It will transport green energy to two million households via a 190-kilometer underwater cable that will connect southeastern Scotland with northeastern England. Onshore works are already underway, while offshore construction is expected to begin in the summer.
