"The issue of accuracy is the first problem that concerns Greek households, it is the elephant in the room. It dominates public opinion polls, leaving behind other issues of everyday life," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed, opening his speech in the pre-dawn debate in Parliament on accuracy.
Tackling the problem of accuracy is an absolute political priority, he assured. Focusing on the problems that the government had to deal with, the prime minister recalled that the invasion of Ukraine, the energy crisis and electricity price increases had sealed its term of office. "We were able to stop the electricity price increases. Electricity prices have returned to pre-crisis levels. But the problem persists," he acknowledged.
Mr. Mitsotakis pointed out that the problem of accuracy has national peculiarities, but it is a problem that other EU countries are also facing. It is not just a Greek problem, he said.
He then referred to his initiative to send a letter to the President of the Commission asking for European intervention on the different pricing by the multinationals. Underlining the relevance of this initiative, he noted that "the trading giants, the multinationals, should not impose geographical restrictions on retail supply in order to keep prices high in countries with high market shares, nor should they lower them where they want to in order to gain a dominant position. The same product cannot be marketed with such large price differences in Paris, Athens or elsewhere. It is a cedroscopic tactic that is not only linked to transport costs and requires a European response. The EU must oppose such practices with a policy of strict rules," he said.
