On Wednesday afternoon, businessman Spyros Theodoropoulos, the head of Bespoke and a candidate for the upcoming elections to become president of the Hellenic Business Association (SEV), rang the bell for the growing uncertainty that is overtaking domestic entrepreneurship.
As he clarified, there is a lot of uncertainty for business at the moment because new problems are popping up, which causes big problems for companies. He spoke extensively about the rising geopolitical risk brought on by the Middle East and Ukrainian crises, which are driving up transportation costs and seriously disrupting the supply chain. He also specifically mentioned the rising cost of energy.
At the same time, he stressed that the climate crisis is an issue of huge proportions, especially for the food industry, but not only because it is driving up costs. He also referred to the plethora of EU directives coming from Europe, which are also driving up costs for businesses.
Finally, he also spoke about the role that ESG criteria are taking on, as he said that even for a bank to provide financing, additional ESG criteria will be needed.
The uncertainty for entrepreneurship is global, but for Greece it is even greater, given additional issues such as the lack of qualified staff.
