Greece's first green digital skyscraper, the Tower of Piraeus, which rises 88 meters above the sea, was inaugurated late Tuesday in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after almost 50 years of waiting and 4 years of work.
The completion of an iconic project that some people first imagined more than 50 years ago, as Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized And I would say that this project that we see today is, in its own way, the symbol of a city that is changing, but also the symbol of a country that is moving confidently into the future. This project was made possible thanks to the visionary spirit of the municipality and those who developed it and took the entrepreneurial risk at a time when the country was emerging from a major crisis."
In his speech, Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis called it a 'historic day' for the city of Piraeus. "With joy, emotion, and above all pride, we inaugurate the Tower of Piraeus. The inauguration was 50 years late—half a century—that's how long it has been since it was built, but from then until today, it has not been used. This building, the second highest in the country and owned by the Municipality of Piraeus, has remained unused for decades. Today, however, the tower is here and radiates throughout the port. It is a modern building, a model of bioclimatic design and environmental footprint. It is Greece's first green skyscraper, and, strange as it may seem, it is in Piraeus. Its glowing facade, reflecting the sky and the sea of Piraeus, illuminates not only the city but, I think, also the hearts of its citizens. The development of the tower is truly one of the achievements of which not only I but also our municipal team are proud. We have proven as a municipal authority that the impossible becomes possible. With planning, perseverance, and, above all, hard work, we have created a special landmark of unique aesthetics."
During the speech of the Mayor of Piraeus, Yannis Moralis, who addressed the Prime Minister, he referred, among other things, to the city's immediate need for the undergrounding of the lines of the electric train, while then there was a response from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis that the government sees this project very positively and procedures are already underway to find funding so that it can be put into practice immediately.
It is recalled that the construction of the building began in 1972, but the second building in Greece remained unfinished for 47 years. A sleeping giant, as the local residents called it.
Dimand CEO Dimitris Andriopoulos said: "The project and the project you see was not a walk in the woods; it was a difficult project. The Tower is in fact the greenest, friendliest, and most modern building."
