The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announces the results of the Labor Force Survey for the first
quarter of 2024.
More specifically, during the first quarter of 2024:
▪ The number of persons employed amounted to 4,173,424, recording a decrease by 0.2% compared
to the previous quarter and an increase by 1.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year
(Tables 1, 2).
▪ The number of unemployed persons amounted to 574,130, recording an increase by 17.5%
compared to the previous quarter and an increase by 4.3% compared to the same quarter of the
previous year (Tables 1, 4). The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2024 was 12.1% (Table
1). The unemployment rate was 10.5% in the previous quarter (2023 Q4) and 11.8% in the
corresponding quarter of the previous year (2023 Q1).
▪ The number of persons outside the labour force, i.e., the persons who are neither working nor
looking for a job, amounted to 4,278,162. In particular, persons outside the labour force under the
age of 75, amounted to 3,049,185. Their share decreased by 2.5% compared with the previous
quarter and by 3.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
The ELSTAT data showed that in the first quarter of 2024, the largest percentage of the employed are employed as employees (68.3%), while the percentage of self-employed without staff is also significant (20.6%).
The part-time employment rate is 7.9%, an increase of 3.9% compared to the previous quarter and a decrease of 4.9% compared to the same quarter last year.
The percentage of people in temporary employment is 8.2%, showing a decrease of 23.5% compared to the previous quarter and a decrease of 12.0% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
The occupations with the highest proportion of employed people are service and sales workers (22.2%) and professional workers (22.1%).
Compared to the previous quarter, the largest increase is seen in operators of industrial plants, machinery, and equipment (4.5%), while the largest decrease is seen in unskilled workers, manual workers, and small craft workers (-5.6%).
Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the largest increase is observed among office workers (6.9%), while the decrease is mainly observed among unskilled manual workers (-8.7%) and technicians and associate professionals (-4.6%).
