The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, approved the national strategy for the implementation of building information modeling (BIM) in Greece, with the aim of digital transformation of the construction sector.

"The application of BIM technology contributes to the creation of durable and sustainable projects, as it improves the design, construction, and maintenance commissioning processes, preventing errors, time, and cost overruns throughout their life cycle," said Mr. Staikouras, stressing that one of the key priorities set by the government's programmatic statements is being implemented.

In particular, with a focus on digital technology, effective collaboration, human resource skills, and support for SMEs, the gradual adoption of construction information modelling will enhance:

  • the performance of the construction industry
  • the competitiveness of Greek enterprises in the domestic and international market
    innovation; and
  • the development of the Greek economy

The strategy aims to ensure the readiness of the public sector for the implementation of the BIM process in public construction projects. In this direction, an important factor is the introduction of standards, amendments and additions to legislation, as well as the training of public administration staff in terms of the technical, digital and cognitive level required for the use of BIM technological tools.

In addition, effective communication of the benefits of using the BIM process can act as an accelerator of the digital transformation of the construction sector through training and modernisation of enterprises.

At the same time, in order to inform the technical world of the country, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is proceeding with the implementation of a BIM Communication Platform, an information and communication hub on the Ministry's website (https://www.yme.gr/epikoinoniaki-platforma-bim), which will include, among other things, news and updates on the digitization of construction, educational material, European initiatives, tools, and upcoming events.

The content of the platform will be enriched throughout the project, "Implementation of the BIM Roadmap in Greece, including pilot projects,"  which is implemented at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in cooperation with DG REFORM and funded by TSI 2023.
