In his first interview after Sunday’s European Parliament elections, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ruled out the possibility of holding an early election despite the disappointing result for his conservative party.

After New Democracy received 28.3% of the vote, Mitsotakis told Alpha TV, "The result was not what we expected." Just a year earlier, the party had won nearly 41% of the vote in the national elections.

"There is no possibility of a snap election," he stated, adding that "I believe in 4-year cycles."

The prime minister made it clear that his government would proceed with implementing its policy program.

“We will proceed with the great reforms; we will step on the gas, not the brakes,” he said.

In addition, he declared that he had gotten the message from the electorate and that he would make "corrective moves," implying a possible reorganization of the cabinet.

“Ministers either change positions or leave,” he said, adding that they are judged on their effectiveness.

Given that this was the seventh election to be held in Greece since 2019, the prime minister claimed that the record-breaking 59.5% abstention was indicative of Greeks' fatigue with frequent elections.
