One of the first opinion surveys following this month's European Parliament results shows that the conservative New Democracy (ND) party, which is in power, is preferred by 29.1% of respondents, with SYRIZA, the main opposition leftist party, coming in second at 13.7%.

On Thursday night's prime-time newscast of the Star Channel, the GPO firm conducted the poll.

The Communist Party (KKE) is in second place with 8%, just behind the right-of-center and anti-European Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) party, which is still in third place.

Another four lesser parties, three of which are represented in the current Parliament, are shown at above 3%, with the Voice of Reason (Foni Logikis) debuting above the threshold in the specific firm’s polls at 3.3%

When asked about internal developments within PASOK in the wake of the party's poor performance in the EP election, 66.4% of respondents supported a grassroots vote for the party's president, while 24.1% disagreed.

Even so, with 20.7% of respondents choosing him, current PASOK president Nikos Androulakis is the front-runner for the position should an election be approved. His figure rises to 34.5% of respondents who said they were also PASOK voters. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas is second with 16.5%, but third when it comes to PASOK voters, 17.7%. Former minister and current MP Pavlos Yeroulanos edges the Athens mayor, picking up 17.7% of respondents who say they are PASOK voters.
