Decline in household deposits, increase for businesses
In May, net financing to the private sector was €66 million, while net financing to businesses was positive by €105 million.

Net financing to businesses was positive by €105 million in May, while net financing to the private sector amounted to €66 million. Household deposits decreased by €274 million, and business deposits increased by €577 million.

According to Bank of Greece data, the annual rate of change in total financing of the domestic economy was 2.7% in May 2024, up from 2.6% in the previous month. The annual rate of change in total deposits fell to 1.1% from 1.3% in the previous month.  Private sector deposits increased by €303 million in May 2024, compared to an increase of €384 million in the previous month.

I. Credit to the domestic economy

Τhe monthly net flow of total credit was positive by €659 million in May 2024, compared with a negative net flow of €815 million in the previous month.

Ι.1 Credit to the general government

In May 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to the general government was positive by €593 million, compared with a negative net flow of €26 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -0.5% from -0.4% in the previous month.

Ι.2 Credit to the private sector

In May 2024, the annual growth rate of credit to the private sector increased to 4.8% from 4.5% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of credit was positive by €66 million, compared with a negative net flow of €789 million in the previous month.

Ι.2.1 Credit to corporations

In May 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to corporations was positive by €105 million, compared with a negative net flow of €730 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 8.3% from 7.8% in the previous month. In particular, the annual growth rate of credit to non-financial corporations (NFCs) increased to 7.6% from 6.9% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €78 million, compared with a negative net flow of €298 million in the previous month. The annual growth rate of credit to insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries decreased to 13.7% from 15.8% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €27 million, compared with a negative net flow of €432 million in the previous month.

Ι.2.2 Credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships

In May 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships was negative by €7 million, compared with a negative net flow of €26 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 0.3% compared with -0.1% in the previous month.

Ι.2.3 Credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions

In May 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions was negative by €32 million, compared with a negative net flow of €34 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -1.0% compared with -1.1% in the previous month.

II. Deposits by the domestic economy with the domestic credit institutions

In May 2024, the monthly net flow of total deposits was positive by €363 million, compared with a positive net flow of €135 million in April 2024.

ΙΙ.1 Deposits placed by the general government

In May 2024, deposits placed by the general government increased by €60 million, compared with a decrease of €249 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -27.0% compared with -27.7% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2 Deposits placed by the private sector

In May 2024, deposits placed by the private sector increased by €303 million, compared with an increase of €384 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 2.5% from 2.8% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.1 Corporate deposits

In May 2024, corporate deposits increased by €577 million, compared with an increase of €36 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 3.1% from 4.4% in the previous month. In particular, deposits from NFCs increased by €559 million, against a decrease of €154 million in the previous month. Deposits placed by insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased by €18 million, compared with an increase of €190 million in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.2 Deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions

In May 2024, deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions decreased by €274 million, compared with an increase of €348 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate remained unchanged at 2.3% compared to the previous month.
