Investments in wind farms totaling more than €110 million were connected to the grid during the first half of 2024, according to the Wind Energy Statistics announced by the Hellenic Scientific Association for Wind Energy (ELETAEN).

Thus, the capacity of wind farms connected to the grid at the end of June 2024 reached 5,326 megawatts, as 33 new wind turbines with a total capacity of 96.9 MW were connected to the grid in the first half of 2024. This corresponds to an annual growth rate of 3.7%.

According to the data released by ELETAEN:

  • The previous year, 2023, was the second-best year after 2019 best year with the most wind installations. Early 2024 saw a decrease in the growth rate along with the number of installations completed in 2023.
  • At the end of June 2024, around 970 MW of new wind farms were under construction or contracted, the vast majority of which are expected to be connected to the grid within the next 18 months. As a result, total wind capacity will approach 6.5 GW within the next two years.
  • At the regional level, Central Greece continues to lead the list of wind installations with 2,314 MW (43%), the Peloponnese coming in second with 671 MW (13%), and Eastern Macedonia-Thrace coming in third with 535 MW (10%).
  • In the first half of 2024, new wind turbines were installed in only six regions of the country. "The greater geographical dispersion of wind installations helps the optimal participation of wind energy in electricity generation, which works to the benefit of the energy system and the consumer," ELETAEN said.

In terms of business groups, the top five are TERNA Energy with 1,034 MW (19.4%), MORE with 766 MW (14.4%), Iberdrola Rokas with 409 MW (7.7%), Principia with 368 MW (6.9%) and PPC Renewables with 276 MW (5.2%).
