The country has more than covered its needs in LNG through Revithoussa and the Alexandroupolis station, said the Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis.
As reported by Athens News Agency, Mr. Skylakakis had been invited to answer earlier in Parliament to two topical questions of Christos Boukorou (ND) and Alexandros Meikopoulos (SYRIZA) on the "approval of the Waste, Energy, and Water Regulatory Authority's opinion on the installation of a floating LNG plant in Pagasitikos Kolpos in Thessaly, contrary to the opinion of the local community, local government, and scientific bodies.".
"The RAAEY is not mine; it is an independent authority. Our own agency, a year ago, said it did not see maximum environmental problems. But this in no way prejudges the decision of the agency, which in principle is taken at the departmental level," he said, adding: "My view, as the minister in charge, is that this investment comes at a time when the country has covered, or has more than covered, its needs in LNG through Revithoussa and the Alexandroupolis station. It is therefore not a matter of the country's energy security. It is possibly about supply interests outside the country. My assessment is that this investment has no prospects for implementation in terms of economic and political viability at this stage. We will also wait for the environmental study for a while. The issue has indeed been of concern to the local community recently, and I think it will not continue to be of concern to the local community for long."
