ELSTAT estimated the annual inflation in June at 2.3%. At the same time, the General CPI in June 2024, compared to May 2024, showed an increase of 0.5%, compared to an increase of 0.6% in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.

Based on these numbers, the average CPI for the twelve months of July 2023–June 2024 went up 2.8% compared to the average CPI for the twelve months of July 2022–June 2023. This is compared to an increase of 7% for the comparison between the twelve months of July 2022–June 2023 and the twelve months of July 2021–June 2022.

In June, new pockets of inflationary pressures appear to be forming, with services as the main focus.

Food, of course, continued to appreciate at a rate of 2.1%. At the same time, however, 4.6% price increases were recorded in clothing and footwear, 3.2% in the "Transport" group, and 3.5% in the "Education" group, mainly due to price increases in: pre-school and primary school fees, secondary school fees, and higher education fees.

The average increase of 5.3% in the group "Hotels-Caféterias-Restaurants" stands out.

More specifically, increases of 19.7% are recorded for airline tickets, while the holiday package is 12.7% more expensive. Hotel prices are 12% higher than last year. In restaurants, the price increases are 5.1%.

Health insurance premiums are up 14%.

Changes in the following groups of goods and services were primarily responsible for the 2.3% increase in the General CPI in June 2024 compared to the June 2023 Index:

1. 1:

  • 2.1% in the Food and non-alcoholic beverages group, due mainly to an increase in the prices of: meat (general), fresh fish, olive oil, frozen vegetables, sugar-chocolates-sweets-ice cream, coffee-cocoa-tea, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices. Prices for items like bread and cereal, dairy and eggs, other edible oils, fresh fruit, potatoes, and other foodstuffs decreased, offsetting some of this increase.
  • 1.8% in the Alcoholic beverages and tobacco group, mainly due to an increase in the prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).
  • 4.6% in the Clothing and footwear group, due to an increase in the prices of clothing and footwear.
  • 2.2% in the Health group, mainly due to an increase in prices of: pharmaceuticals, medical, dental and paramedical services, and hospital care.
  • 3.2% in the Transport group, mainly due to an increase in prices of: new cars, car parts and accessories, fuel and lubricants, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, and air passenger tickets. A decrease in prices, particularly for used cars, partially offset part of this increase.
  • 1.8% in the Recreation and leisure activities group, mainly due to an increase in the prices of: information processing equipment, small recreational equipment (pets), recreational and cultural services, newspapers, books, stationery, and holiday packages. A decrease in prices, particularly for audio and video processing equipment, offset some of this increase.
  • 3.5% in the Education group, mainly due to an increase in prices of: pre-school and primary school fees, secondary school fees, and higher education fees.
  • 5.3% in the Hotels-Cafeterias-Restaurants group, mainly due to price increases in: restaurants-cafeterias-cafeterias-cafeterias, hotels-motels-pensions.
  • 2.2% in the Other goods and services group, mainly due to price increases in: hairdressing salons and personal care shops, other personal effects, health insurance premiums; and motor insurance premiums. A decrease in prices, primarily for other personal care products, offset some of this increase.
