The Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, made a set of announcements on very serious issues concerning Rhodes and the Dodecanese as a whole, with the main one being the electrical interconnection with the mainland, after a meeting he had today at noon with the South Aegean regional governor George Hadjimarkos and the mayor of Rhodes, Alexandros Koliadis.
Mr. Skylakakis announced that next September will go on air the tender for the electrical interconnection of the islands by cable, specifically through Corinth, where the High Voltage Centre (KYT) is already ready, which was inaugurated a month ago and has been structured in such a way as to form the basis for the electrical interconnection of the Dodecanese.
At the same time, according to Athens News Agency, he announced the elaboration by the services of the Ministry of Environment of a programme for the management of the overpopulation of the dama-dama deer of Rhodes, while regarding the "The Rhodes Co-LLab" project, the Environment Minister announced the participation of the Ministry of Environment in the project, with actions that will combine high-quality tourism services with significant water savings, contributing to the objective of becoming a model of sustainability in tourism.
Specifically on the electrical interconnection of the Dodecanese, Mr. Skylakakis said: "We are moving very soon to the next step for the electrical interconnection of the Dodecanese with mainland Greece. In September, we will launch a tender for the cable. We are talking about a huge investment that will provide energy security and allow a much better exploitation of the offshore energy resources available in the Aegean. When the interconnection is completed, then we are talking about a new reality.". He assured that in combination with the interconnection, "there will always be, either with cold reserve or with batteries or with a combination of batteries and cold reserve, absolute energy coverage of the islands.".
