According to Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA) data for the first half of 2024, domestic gas consumption is on the rise. The LNG Terminal at Revithoussa (Agia Triada entry point), which accounted for almost one-third (29.74%) of all gas imports, was the country's secondary gas entry point during this time.

According to DESFA's data, in the first half of 2024, domestic gas consumption increased by 29.76%, reaching 30.78 terawatt hours (TWh), up from 23.72 TWh in the same period last year. On the other hand, total gas demand was recorded to be slightly down by 7.14% due to a decrease in exports.

Natural gas imports amounted to 30.93 TWh, registering a slight decrease of 8.14% compared to 33.67 TWh in H1 2023. The largest volumes were imported from the Sidirokastro entry point (15.7 TWh), which accounted for 50.76% of imports. The contribution of the Revithoussa LNG Terminal remained significant, which covered 29.74% of total gas imports with 9.2 TWh, while the New Meridian entry point, via the TAP pipeline, covered 19.52% with 6.03 TWh.

Regarding the LNG offloadings made at the Revithusa Terminal in January–June 2024, these involved about 8.96 TWh from 12 tankers, compared to about 17.3 TWh from 26 tankers in the corresponding period of the previous year. 67.97% of these LNG volumes came from the US, reaching 6.09 TWh. In second place were imports from Russia (1.91 TWh), followed by Algeria (0.48 TWh) and Norway (0.48 TWh).  Meanwhile, in terms of the operation of the LNG Truck Loading service, which offers a flexible solution for the road transport of significant quantities of LNG to off-grid areas and users, since its launch in November 2023, 104 LNG Trucks have been unloaded, moving 4,675,00 m3 of LNG or 30,139 MWh of energy equivalent.

In terms of gas consumer categories, power generators continue to record the highest consumption, meeting 63.97% of domestic demand with 19.69 TWh out of a total of 30.78 TWh, registering an increase of 30.92% year-on-year. Since the beginning of 2023, the amount of natural gas used by businesses and CNG vehicle refueling stations directly connected to the ESMFA has grown by 141.36%. This added up to 4.61 TWh, which is almost 14.97% of the country's total demand. Consumption by distribution networks in the first half of 2024 was at the level of 6.48 TWh, covering 21.05% of total demand.

DESFA's infrastructure continues to make a significant contribution to the diversification of gas supply sources and security of supply. Finally, the liberalisation of the energy market and the Third Party Access (TPA) regime under which DESFA operates are enhancing price competition. The rules of the European Union and national legislation govern Third Party Access (TPA), ensuring open access to any interested party.
