Independent Power Transmission Operator is launching a tender for the new Igoumenitsa-Corfu High Voltage Transmission Line (mixed underground and submarine cable line with its accompanying works) in order to strengthen the island's electricity system.
This is the third way of interconnecting Corfu with the Continental System through the new cable connection "Aetos-Corfu," which is expected to be completed within 2025.
The project concerns the design, supply, and installation of an integrated 150 kV simple circuit cable system for the interconnection of Igoumenitsa with Corfu. The purpose of the project is to ensure a secure supply to the island through the reinforcement of its existing interconnection.
Two 150 kV cable lines currently connect Corfu with the mainland electricity system. The new project constitutes the third 150 kV cable line, which will be implemented on a new route. Upon completion of the project, it will be possible to safely cover an additional load of 60 MW minimum, even in emergency conditions.
The project includes the design, supply, and installation of underground (4 km) and submarine (17.1 km) 150 kV AC cables within 12 months from the signature of the contract with the contractor.
In particular, the first part of the project includes a three-pole 150 kV submarine cable, 17.1 km long, with two integrated telecommunications submarine fibre optic cables, which will connect the area "Aetos" of the D. Filiates with the area "Ormos Potamos" of the D. Central Corfu.
Two underground fiber optic cables, each 320 m long, and a three-phase 150 kV underground cable circuit make up the project's second component.
In the last section, the three-phase 150 kV underground cable circuit (with the fibre optic cables) will be connected to the Corfu I substation.
This is an important new project, with a budget of 42.800.000 euros, which will shield the resilience of Corfu's electricity system, as it will safely cover the ever-increasing demand that occurs mainly during the summer months (due to tourism).
ADMIE is investing €100 million until 2025, based on its 10-year development plan, to upgrade the electricity interconnections in the Ionian Islands to ensure a smooth energy supply.
