Greece's role in the Commission must be important, Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Ursula von der Leyen, according to Politico.

"I would like a portfolio that reflects on the one hand the progress Greece has made economically and on the other hand the strategic position the country has at the southeastern edge of Europe and NATO," the Greek prime minister told Politico.

Asked if Athens is targeting the post of Mediterranean commissioner announced by von der Leyen, Mitsotakis replies, "I don't mean that, but what I am saying is that there are other portfolios that could correspond to what we want. I think it is a good idea to have a commissioner for the Mediterranean. I anticipate that a representative of a Mediterranean nation will eventually occupy the position. I am not declaring a preference because there are other portfolios that could be of great interest to us, and in the end, it is a decision that the President of the Commission will make."

On the issue of the Greek commissioner, Mitsotakis has not yet announced Greece's choice for the next Commission. The current Greek commissioner, Margaritas Schinas, told Brussels Playbook this month that she would like to stay on and that this would be "a great honor.".
