The 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy can be a new starting point for the country, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said from the floor of Parliament, speaking at the special anniversary session.
As he said, "what is needed is rapid European convergence. Now is the time for leaps and bounds. We are claiming this perspective today, drawing lessons from yesterday. Just as the weak Balkan country of 1974 gradually transformed itself into a stable democracy, Greece, in the face of sedimentation and division, succeeded in recovering its economy. In 2027, when we meet again at the polls, Greece will be much better than it is today," the Prime Minister said.
He stressed that "in the last phase, difficult and not self-evident conquests were made. Nowadays, the thread of our national goals seems to be coming together again, because the junta may have violently cut off Greece's effort to overcome the civil war, while the memoranda put Greece in the labyrinth of regression."
This is, as the prime minister noted, "a battle of reforms that Greece is fighting to get rid of the brakes that have held it back, from tax evasion and violence in the stadiums to delays in the justice system." He identified the goal of rapid convergence with advanced European countries in wages, institutions, and individual attitudes. "We are in danger of forgetting these failures in our self-referentiality and satisfaction with the foundation of democracy," Mr. Mitsotakis said.
