Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, calls on Brussels to take political action to urgently address the "protracted crisis" that has driven electricity prices to extreme levels, according to a report in the Financial Times.
Specifically, the paper said, in a letter to the European Commission, Mitsotakis said that electricity prices rose in August from €60 per megawatt hour to €130.
In this context, he calls on Ursula von der Leyen to make the most of her second five-year term as Commission President and to take initiatives to avoid such situations in the future.
In particular, the Prime Minister calls on the EU to take action to increase cross-border energy transmission capacities and stresses the importance of better supervision of the European market, which he describes as a "black box" that is "incomprehensible even to experts.".
According to the prime minister, pricing on the wholesale market is not only affected by seasonal factors such as heat waves and drought but also by the extensive damage caused by Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which have resulted in Kiev importing large amounts of electricity from the EU.
