Nicos Christodoulides, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, confirmed their interest in and political commitment to the implementation of the high strategic and economic importance of the electricity interconnection project between the two nations.
According to the statement, Nikos Christodoulides thoroughly briefed the Greek Prime Minister on the relevant decision of the Council of Ministers during the meeting of the Council of Ministers on 17 September 2024.
At the same time, President Christodoulides confirmed the political commitment of the Republic of Cyprus to participate in the equity of the project as soon as possible, and after the completion of the due diligence study and the establishment of a special purpose company, for which advanced consultations with third countries are ongoing.

The President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides met today with the Greek Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Megaro Maximou in Athens.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed, among other issues, the prospects for the resumption of the Cyprus settlement talks, developments in the dialogue on Greek-Turkish relations, regional developments, and the issue of the electrical interconnection between Cyprus and Greece.
With regard to the prospects for the resumption of talks and on the occasion of the two leaders' upcoming trip to New York next week, in the context of their participation in the High Level Week of the 79th UN General Assembly, as well as their meetings with the Secretary General of the Organization and with leaders of foreign countries, the President of the Republic reaffirmed his full readiness and political will to resume negotiations for a settlement of the Cyprus problem, always on the basis of the resolutions and decisions of the United Nations, the principles and values of the European Union (EU), and building on the acquis of the talks to date.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional developments and agreed on the need to continue efforts to resolve the crisis, while at the same time highlighting the role of Cyprus and Greece as pillars of stability, security, and peace in the region.
