Progress in Greek-Turkish relations, developments on migration, regional developments against the backdrop of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as efforts on the Cyprus problem, are expected to be the focus of the meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Tayyip Erdogan in New York today.
According to Greek Public Broadcaster, ERT, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is attending the sixth meeting in the last 15 months, given the government's firm positions and "red lines," but also with a strong desire to continue the dialogue and promote the issues of so-called soft diplomacy.
The two men will meet on Tuesday afternoon on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Bilateral relations will be on the agenda, with Mitsotakis and Erdogan reviewing the progress made so far.
In the meeting, which will have a tighter timeframe, the two leaders will discuss the timetable for political dialogue, the positive agenda and confidence-building measures.
Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis also referred to the upcoming meeting: "We are seeking dialogue. We have results from dialogue on very important issues. Dialogue does not mean that we agree on everything, nor is the country naive," he stressed. Asked if we are closer to deeper in the discussion the delimitation of EEZ and continental shelf, he replied that this is our only difference and for it to be discussed both parties must agree on the agenda. "We are never going to agree on anything other than the one difference, which is the definition of EEZ and continental shelf (...) Greece has not lost from this whole process and does not even intend to discuss sovereignty issues and has only come out stronger," he stressed.
A key subject of the discussion will be migration, where developments—both in Europe and the Middle East—call on both sides to be vigilant and cooperate.
On migration, government officials describe the level of cooperation as very good, which has helped to contain the flows. However, changing the modus operandi of the smuggling rings requires an upgrade of operations.
The two leaders will also address regional developments, with Athens stressing the need for understanding in the midst of two ongoing wars and the Greek Prime Minister highlighting the need for adherence to international law at the UN Summit on the Future.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis is also expected to raise the Cyprus issue. The Greek side considers positive the mobility that exists with the meetings of Mr Christodoulides and Mr Tatar with the Secretary General of the organisation. There is also an expectation of a meeting between Mr Christodoulides and Mr Tatar, despite the negative climate with the conditions and demands of the Turkish Cypriot side.
The meeting will be attended by the two foreign ministers, George Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan, as well as the diplomatic advisers of the two leaders, Anna-Maria Bura and Akif Chagatai Kilits.
