In 2022, the total turnover of enterprises operating in the country in the sectors of industry, construction, trade and services amounted to €415.5 billion, while the production value and gross value added amounted to €271 and €90.9 billion, respectively, based on ELSTAT data.
Business expenditure on purchases of goods and services in the course of their activity amounted to €349.1 billion, of which €167 billion related to purchases of goods and services for resale in the state in which they were received, unprocessed. At the same time, they made investments amounting to € 12,2 billion.
LARGEST NUMBER OF ENTERPISES
In 2022, a total of 918,724 enterprises were active in Greece in the industry, construction, trade and services sectors. The sectors with the largest number of enterprises were wholesale and retail trade with 226,009 enterprises, accounting for 24.6% of the total, professional, scientific and technical services with 156,446 enterprises, accounting for 17%, followed by accommodation and food services with 109,755 enterprises, accounting for 11.9%.
HIGHEST TURNOVER
The manufacturing and electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sectors came in second and third, with percentages of 22.2% and 8% and absolute values of €92.1 billion and €33.3 billion respectively, of the total turnover that businesses reported in 2022. The wholesale and retail trade sector held the largest share with 38.5% and €160.2 billion.
HIGHEST GROSS ADDED VALUE
The sectors contributing the largest gross value added to the Greek economy were wholesale and retail trade with €16.9 billion (18.6%), manufacturing with €16.6 billion (18.2%), and financial and insurance activities with €11.8 billion (12.9%).
HIGHEST COSTS
On the personnel costs side, the sectors that recorded the highest expenditure were wholesale and retail trade with € 10.3 billion (24.3%), manufacturing with € 7.5 billion (17.6%) and accommodation and food services with € 4.6 billion (10.8%).
HIGHEST EMPLOYMENT
In terms of employment, the wholesale and retail trade sector held the first place in 2022 with 811,140 employees (23.8%), of which 588,424 were employees (23.1% of total employees). Following this were manufacturing with 373,258 employees (11%), of which 318,379 were employees (12.5%), and accommodation and food service activities with 702,911 employees (20.6%), of which 595,509 were employees (23.3%).
