A Joint Ministerial Decision (JMD) expands the areas where electricity storage stations can be installed.

To this end, the owners of the plants will have to participate in the competitive procedure of the Waste, Energy, and Water Regulatory Authority, which is expected to take place for the granting of investment and operating aid.

The EIA was signed by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Theo Skylakakis, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Mrs. Alexandra Sdoukou, and the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Mr. Nikos Papathanasis.

In particular, the Decision provides that, in addition to the Municipality of Megalopolis and the Region of Western Macedonia, the third competitive procedure will now be open to the participation of storage stations developed in all the areas included in the Fair Development Transition Plan, i.e., the regions of Western Macedonia and the Municipalities of Megalopolis, Tripoli, Gortynia, and Oichalia.

The following two main benefits result from the EIA:

In areas of the Peloponnese, where the grid has been classified by decisions of the PPAEY as saturated, and in the areas of Western Macedonia, where more than 4,000 MW of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) stations are operating and being developed, it will be possible to install electricity storage stations, which will help to remove saturation and to efficiently integrate and operate RES stations.

The momentum of the forthcoming competitive process is strengthened as more electricity storage plants are expected to participate in it.
