Trade deficit exceeded €22 billion in 8 months - 7.7% increase
The trade imbalance for the January–August 2024 period was €22.004 billion, up 7.7% in euros from €20.43 billion in the corresponding period of 2023.

The trade deficit for the January–August 2024 period was €22.004 billion, up 7.7% in euros from €20.43 billion in the corresponding period of 2023.

According to ELSTAT data, the corresponding figure without oil products showed an increase of €1,393.1 million, i.e., 8.4%, and the corresponding figure without oil products and ships showed an increase of €1,356.1 million, i.e., 8.2%.

In particular, the total value of imports in the period January-August 2024 amounted to € 55,723.0 million compared to € 54,649.1 million in the same period of the year 2023, showing an increase, in euro terms, of 2.0%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products showed an increase of €1,095.8 million, i.e., 2.7%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships showed an increase of €1,075.1 million, i.e., 2.7%, compared to the period January-August 2023.

The total value of exports in the period January-August 2024 amounted to €33,718.9 million compared to €34,219.3 million euros in the same period of the year 2023, showing a decrease in euros, of 1.5%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products showed a decrease of €297.3 million, or 1.2%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships showed a decrease of €281.0 million, or 1.2%, compared to the January-August 2023 period.
