AEGEAN's passenger traffic exceeded 12.5 million passengers in the first nine months of 2024, a 5% year-on-year increase, while carrying more than 5.3 million passengers in the third quarter. The airline also continued to grow in Q3, offering more than 6.3 million seats (+2% year-on-year), with total seats offered for the nine months to 2024 exceeding 15.2 million, up 6% year-on-year.
In particular, in the third quarter, domestic network passenger traffic recorded a steady upward trend, increasing by 6%, while international network passenger traffic recorded a small 3% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, reflecting mainly the decrease in activity in Israel and the Middle East more broadly (Beirut, Amman), but also the significant reduction in charter activity chosen to address the shortage of aircraft availability.
In addition, the growth of the domestic network continues to be fuelled by increasing traffic to/from the major European long-haul hubs (Frankfurt, London, London, Istanbul, Dubai), mainly via Athens but also Thessaloniki, where they recorded a 3% increase in international traffic, while it is worth noting that direct domestic connections from Thessaloniki to the periphery of the country, where AEGEAN now operates to and from 15 destinations in Greece, almost doubled compared to last year.
As stated in the announcement, for Q4 AEGEAN, aiming to mitigate seasonality and expand the tourist season, is offering 4.5 million passengers. more seats in total than last year (+7%) by increasing its activity to and from London (one more daily flight to Heathrow), Turkey (one more daily flight from/to Istanbul), Cyprus (one more daily flight from Athens and up to 4 weekly flights from Thessaloniki), the Balkans (more flights to Albania, Serbia, Moldova, Bulgaria) and the United Arab Emirates, with a new route to Abu Dhabi starting operations on 27 October.
In particular, AEGEAN, continuing its strategy of increasing its activity in the Turkish market, is increasing its presence on existing routes from Athens to Istanbul and Izmir to 4 daily already from October 2024 and 5 weekly respectively from the 2025 summer schedule and adding new direct flights from Heraklion, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini to Istanbul. More specifically, from April 2025 and throughout the summer season Heraklion and Santorini will be connected to Istanbul with 2 weekly flights, which will increase to 4 during the peak season, while from June 2025 direct flights to and from Istanbul will also be operated from Mykonos and Rhodes (2 weekly flights respectively).
It is noted that AEGEAN has recorded a 50% increase in both activity and passenger traffic in the Turkish market for 2024 and by the end of the year is expected to carry more than 400 thousand passengers, offering more than half a million seats, strengthening its presence in the region and significantly expanding passenger choice.
