The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in cooperation with OASA and the GrowthFund, is promoting a broad plan for the restructuring of public transport in Attica.
The Strategic Transport Plan for Attica for the next 20 years is expected to be completed by 2026 and will include the promotion of sustainable mobility, the strengthening of green transport and the rerouting of buses and trolleybuses, taking into account saturated neighbourhoods, new urban densities, areas where workers are most mobile, and the new Metro Line 4. As noted yesterday at an information meeting, the aim with the development of the new Transport Charter is to create a more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly urban transport system that will better meet the needs of citizens, with an emphasis on the interoperability of urban transport, so that all means of transport operate in a complementary manner.
NEW TRANSPORT MAP
By May 2025, the transport map of Attica is expected to be completed, including provisions for cycle lanes, parking areas, taxi stands, chargers for electric vehicles, barrier-free pavements, standard stops, digital services and wifi on buses. Contactless payments The launch of contactless payments by card or digital wallet in all Athens public transport is expected no later than 23 December 2024 and constitutes the first phase of the Tap 'n' Pay service. In the next phase, the system will have the possibility of account-based ticketing. This will allow passengers to create accounts through which they can make card and ticket purchases, while mobility-as-a-service services will be added.
TENDER
In addition, a tender is expected to be launched in early 2025 for the installation of wifi on the bus fleet, which is estimated to be activated by the end of 2026.
NEW BUSES & METRO
Speaking at the conference, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, recalled that 250 new, modern, anti-pollution technology buses have started to circulate in Attica, with the aim of 950 buses by the summer of 2025, while the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is currently seeking funding for an additional 700 buses and trolleybuses. Finally, the refurbished trains, which will renew the fleet for the first time since 2002, are expected to be delivered in 2025.
