GEK TERNA has been selected as the provisional contractor for the project "Transfer and distribution of water from the river Nestos to the plain of Xanthi for irrigation purposes," with a budget of €169.50 million euros (plus VAT) in terms of net present value with parallel financing of €51 million from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, i.e. a total of €220.500 million.

The completion of the procedure for the Evaluation of the Participation Documents - Technical Bid and Financial Bid and the appointment of the Provisional Contractor for the project to be implemented as a PPP project under the Water 2.0 programme. , were announced by the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Costas Tsiaras, the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikos Papathanasis, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Dionysios Stamenitis and the Secretary General of EU Resources and Infrastructure of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, Dimitris Papagiannidis. 

This project is the second PPP project in a row and the largest project of the Water 2.0 programme, for which the very important procedure for the appointment of the Interim Contractor is being completed, while the corresponding procedure for the remaining three irrigation projects of the Water 2.0 programme is expected to be completed in the coming days.

The project includes the preparation of all required studies, as well as the construction, financing, maintenance and operation of water abstraction projects from the river Nestos (Toxotes dam) and its disposal in the eastern plain of Xanthi, which presents the most serious water logging problems in Greece, to serve the irrigation needs of about 56 thousand acres.
