The need to improve the efficiency of energy-saving programmes in order to achieve the ambitious energy planning targets with the available funds was highlighted by the political leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy at the Green Deal 2024 conference organised by the Technical Chamber of Greece.
As Deputy Minister Alexandra Sdoukou said, the available funds from the NSRF, the Recovery Fund, the Island Rehabilitation Fund, and the social climate fund expected in 2026 for the support of vulnerable households and businesses amount to €6.25 billion. She pointed out that in previous years 2 billion was allocated for savings programmes, replacement of household appliances, water heaters, installation of photovoltaic panels, etc. noting that: "We spend a lot of money for few beneficiaries, Resources are not inexhaustible; more efficient planning is needed. The new National Energy and Climate Plan envisages the upgrading of 400,000 homes by 2030 and widespread replacement of old heating systems in homes and businesses. Faster carbonisation of the building sector is needed."
Secretary General of Energy and Natural Resources Aristotle Aivaliotis pointed out the contradiction of rejecting "green" energy that cannot be consumed on the one hand and asking citizens to save energy on the other. "For half of Greece from Lamia downwards, heating is no longer a critical factor; we are in November, and it is not needed yet. The main concern should be cooling and more urgently the interventions that need to be made in transport," he said.
