A contract for the construction of the waste management infrastructure of Andros was signed between the contractor company, ELEKTOR S.A., the South Aegean Region as the "Implementing Agency" and the South Aegean Regional Waste Management Authority as the "Project Manager".

The project, the full title of which is 'Construction of a pre-treatment plant for the pre-treatment of residual mixed municipal waste and composting of pre-cleaned organic fraction and landfill of residues on Andros', has a total budget of €10,56 million.

Mr. Nikos Stathakis, CEO of Elektor, said. We are proud as the significant expertise and specialization that we have at ELEKTOR allows us to provide integrated waste management solutions and create a plant that will contribute to a new environmental map for the benefit of Andros and its residents."

The contract concerns the construction and operation of 2 facilities within an area of 90.17 hectares at the location "Plouska" in the municipal unit of Andros in the municipality of Andros.

More specifically, the first facility will be a treatment plant for the residual, after source separation, mixed municipal solid waste (MSW), with a capacity of 2 388 tn/year, as well as biological treatment of the organic fraction. The plant will receive an additional 445 tn/year of pre-sorted organic waste for biological treatment by aerobic composting. The result of the treatment will be the production of high-quality compost from the presorted organic waste, which can be used as a soil conditioner, and A-type compost material from the compost mixtures, which can be used mainly as a coating and rehabilitation material. The residual composite material will be used to recover ferrous metals and other recyclable materials and will also generate solid residues for landfill.

The second facility will be the landfill site for the disposal of residual waste, with a capacity of at least 101,000 m3 and a lifetime of at least 25 years for the final disposal of the waste of the Municipality of Andros. The plant will include the landfill site sealing works, the flood protection works, the drainage collection and treatment works, the biogas management works, the infrastructure works (entrance gate, bridge, etc.), the water supply, irrigation and fire-fighting network, the liquid waste treatment plant, etc.
