Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated Donald Trump on his election as President of the United States in a post on the "X" platform.
"Congratulations on your victory in the elections. Greece looks forward to further deepening the strategic partnership between our two countries and to cooperation on important regional and international issues," the Prime Minister said in his post.
"Circumstance dictated that we should be here a few hours after the US elections. I congratulate President Trump on his emphatic victory, confident that Greek-American relations will be consistently strong and productive. Their character is strategic, and their emphasis is national, not partisan. I look forward to even closer cooperation," Kyriakos Mitsotakis said later in his opening remarks at the presentation of the Foreign Ministry's Strategic Plan for expatriate Greeks.
The Prime Minister noted that the cooperation between Athens and Washington was also close during D. Trump's first presidential term, that the invitation he received to address Congress was from both Democrats and Republicans, and that Greece's stance in NATO and as a partner in the EU is a principled stance. "If I had to make a first comment, it would be about Europe. Our continent must dynamically seek its place in a constantly changing world map. To make the European economy more competitive. To build our strategic autonomy in new conditions," he added, noting that these issues would be discussed at the extraordinary summit in Budapest.
