"GEK Terna's portfolio includes projects worth €10 billion, which are fully aligned with environmental requirements, prioritising climate-friendly and energy innovative projects such as Amfilochia, the largest pumped storage project—recognized as such by the EU—a utility project," said Penelope Lazaridou, Executive Director, Executive Member and General Manager of Financial Services of GEK Terna Group, speaking at the Capital Link conference in New York.

She also mentioned water, waste management and irrigation projects that also highlight the shift towards an environmentally friendly infrastructure strategy. She said that even traditional transport projects such as the Egnatia Road, the North Road Axis of Crete, and the new Heraklion International Airport in Kastelli, which are under construction, will operate under the strictest European environmental standards.

NEW INVESTMENT LANDSCAPE

"Boosted by the recent investment grade upgrades, strong systemic banks and €70 billion of investment grade debt, the region's economy is on track to grow. With funding from the EU, Greece has a historic opportunity for a brighter and greener future," said the Executive Director, Executive Member and General Manager of Financial Services of GEK Terna Group and noted that "in the future, Greece's infrastructure priorities will continue to include transport projects, but will certainly be more diversified and multi-dimensional in response to the environmental and climate challenges of our time.".

INFRASTRUCTURE AND CLIMATE CHANGE

She made particular reference to the fact that Greece is aligning its infrastructure with its climate change management strategy. In particular, under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, €6.3 billion has been allocated to green transition projects, the most important of which are:

  • Water management projects €2.5 billion, with investments to address flooding, control and modernization of irrigation and water treatment facilities to ensure sustainable resources for agriculture and households
  • Waste management projects estimated at €2.5 billion, with advanced treatment facilities aimed at reducing reliance on landfills and boosting landfill and recycling rates
Advanced desalination plants also aligned with environmental protection and the promotion of sustainability
  • Upgrading of the Greek rail network that will enhance national connectivity and contribute to reducing the environmental impact of transport
