All charges for basic banking transactions involving payments will be reset to zero, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced (15/12) in Parliament. As he said, "payments to the state, social security funds, municipalities, energy, water supply and telecommunications companies are being zeroed out, so that everything is done without any cost. And this is done by legislative intervention."
"Ceiling of up to 0.5 euros for the transfer of money up to 5,000 euros by remittance"
He went on to say, "Secondly, a cap of up to 0.5 euros is introduced for the transfer of money up to 5,000 euros by remittance. This puts an end to the abusive practices that wanted banks to determine at will and charging outrageous amounts of this kind of commission. Thirdly, from 2026 we are doubling the ENVAT on the properties managed by banks and servicers so that they know that they will have additional costs if these properties do not come on the market, thus facilitating the limitation of rent increases [...]".
"Fourthly, and I attach great importance to this, we have discussed with the economic staff and the Bank of Greece to end previous restrictions on the operation of credit companies. What does this mean in practice? That large companies with financial capacity will be able to enter the financing market, especially small financing, and they are willing to do so in order to put pressure on the banks to be more competitive in the interest rates they offer, and this will bring more favourable conditions, especially for small business loans, because we are very concerned about the access of small and medium-sized entrepreneurship to bank lending," Mitsotakis said.
"100 million euros from the banks for the renovation of existing or the building of new schools."
He added that "100 million euros from the banks, the four major systemic banks, will be transferred to support the renovation of existing schools or the construction of new schools under the Marietta Giannakou program... And of course 100 million euros will be given by the banks for the establishment of the Real Estate Acquisition and Leaseback Agency".
Mr. Mitsotakis also said, among other things, that an intervention is coming that relieves low pensioners. "And it is known to the Parliamentary Group of the New Democracy, because a relevant question was also submitted regarding the fact that there were potential beneficiaries of the EKAS after 2018, who did not receive the same treatment in terms of participation in medicines. This problem is being solved. All potential beneficiaries will get free medicines without any participation... At the moment, 310,000 low-income pensioners will now have free access to their medicines in total."
