The solidarity between Greece, Egypt and Cyprus in the energy sector was confirmed during the 10th Tripartite Summit of the three countries. Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, spoke of the emphasis on energy security and increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources, while he described the cooperation scheme as "advanced" in the wider region.
"The energy part dominated and we agreed that joint projects in the renewable energy sector, electricity interconnection and gas transmission are vital, as well as strengthening regional integration and ensuring energy sufficiency," Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi said.
GREGY
"We reiterated the commitment of our three states to strengthen our strategic alliance in the energy sector, for the benefit of national and European priorities," Mitsotakis said. "We reaffirmed that we will continue to work consistently to further strengthen it," he said, referring to the use of a wide range of actions.
Referring to the importance the three countries attach to electrical interconnections, he spoke of Gregy, "which will essentially unite Greece and Egypt, making our two countries an energy bridge for the transfer of clean energy, from the wind and the sun, from North Africa to Europe."
CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE
Further, Mitsotakis underlined the importance the three countries attach to "a growing market, the carbon capture and storage market," as "European industry will be moving towards a framework of rapid carbonisation, and that is where we could work closely with Egypt.".
SUEZ CANAL
Finally, reference was to protecting freedom of navigation and maritime trade corridors, which is of particular importance to Egypt because of the Suez Canal.
"I would like to stress that this issue, the issue of freedom of navigation, will be one of the central issues of Greece's priorities in the context of the increased responsibilities that Greece will assume as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council from 1 January this year," Mitsotakis stressed.
