Christos Staikouras, Minister of Infrastructure

In the next period, the tender for the project for the completion of the Skaramanga junction is to be announced, which is to give a big boost to the traffic burden of the major roads of Attica.

The relevant proposal for the tendering of the project to connect the Western Regional Avenue of Egaleo with the Athens-Corinthos National Road, the Skaramanga, Schistos and Shipyard interchanges is to be made today by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, to the Council of Ministers.

This was preceded by a relevant report by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Nikos Tachias, who had noted that the funding will be covered by the Public Investment Programme, with the aim that the project can be put out to tender within the first half of 2025.

THE PROJECT

The origins of the project go back to 1997', without however making significant progress, while the first attempt to revive the project was made in 2017, which did not pay off due to issues with expropriations and the preparation of a corrective cadastre.

Now, the budget of the project "Connection of the Western Regional Avenue of Egaleo with the Athens-Corinthos National Road and completion of the Skaramanga junction" is estimated to reach €70 million and includes:

  • Completion of the last 1.4 km section of the Western Regional Avenue of Egaleo up to the Athens - Corinth National Road with the construction of the Skaramanga interchange.
  • Upgrading of the existing Schistos flyover junction with the construction of another elevated section with a new bridge over the Athens-Corinth motorway
  • Upgrading of the Athens-Corinth motorway on the section between the Athens-Skaramagas and Schistos interchange by increasing and reconfiguring the traffic lanes
  • Construction of the new Shipyards A/C on Schistou Avenue to remove the level signalised junction at the junction with Schistou Avenue and the Naval Fortress of Skaramanga and the completion of the necessary traffic requirements of the road network in the area

WHICH WORKS ARE REQUESTED BY THE COMMISSION

At the same time, the Association of Greek Transport Engineers (FES) and other market players are calling for the creation of a motorway for the Elefsina-Oinofita link, with the cost of the project estimated to exceed €500 million.

In addition, the FTA has underlined the need to proceed with three extensions of the Attiki Odos concerning:

  • Extension of the Ymittos regional road through the Ilioupolis tunnel to Vouliagmeni Avenue, for which Lamda Development has also run a study
  • The connection to Lavrio and Rafina
