
The Land Registry is moving into a new era, with less paper and more speed, as all 392 mortgage offices throughout Greece have been closed for good (201 in 2024), marking a historic transition from bureaucracy to a modern digital world, underscoring in the most emphatic way the modernization of public administration.
With the abolition of mortgage offices, all responsibilities and procedures for the transfer and management of real estate are now transferred to the Land Registry. Citizens are finally saying goodbye to the time-consuming and complex procedures of the past.
At the same time, the digitisation project, which is financed by the Recovery Fund, is already at 45% completion (280 million pages), as noted in an announcement by the Ministry responsible. With the digitisation of 600 million pages, a decades-old demand for modern, fast and secure access to records by lawyers without having to go to any office with a physical presence is being met.
