Digital Realty announced the activation of a Point of Presence (PoP) to enhance connectivity solutions in Crete, in collaboration with EXA Infrastructure (EXA).

The partnership leverages EXA's extensive network capabilities, establishing Crete as a key neutral interconnection point in the Mediterranean, and will support the development of Digital Realty's first data center in Crete, HER1, which will be operational in early 2025, with an initial capacity of 1 MW.

HER1 will be the first carrier-neutral facility in Crete, enabling the interconnection of international and regional submarine cables.

GEOGRAPHICAL ADVANTAGE

HER1, due to its strategic location in Crete, is expected to become a critical interconnection hub for the transfer of data to and from North Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and has the potential to emerge as a major cloud and content hub serving these regions from Europe.

EXA will play a central role as a connectivity provider for HER1, supporting routes from Crete to Athens via a variety of subsea and land routes, extending connectivity to Eastern and Central Europe, and connecting key locations such as Zagreb and Vienna.

In addition, EXA will offer connections between Heraklion and Chania, facilitating interconnection between existing subsea cables and new subsea projects, utilising HER1 as an interconnection hub for data exchange and capacity optimisation.
