The implementation of Integrated Recycling and Waste Recovery Units in the municipalities of Kos and Kalymnos and a landfill of waste, with a total budget of 110 million euros, was approved by the Interministerial PPP Committee, as announced today by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.
In particular, the construction of these projects is part of the National Waste Management Plan and covers a period of up to 27 years, of which 2 years are estimated to cover the construction period and 25 years the operating period.
The need to implement these interventions arises from the application of the general and specific rules that must be observed in the management of solid waste, as already included in national legislation, which refer mainly to the reduction of the amount of waste to be landfilled, the minimization of environmental impacts through the treatment of bio-waste, the possibility of producing products (materials and/or energy), the utilization of which can bring economic benefits and contribute to the rational use of waste in general, and the reduction of the amount of waste to be disposed of in landfills.
The committee met under the chairmanship of the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikos Papathanasis and with the participation of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras; the Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis; the Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos; the Minister of Interior, Theodoros Livanios; and the Minister of State responsible for the Coordination of the Government Project, Akis Skertzos.
The teleconference was attended by the Secretary General of Waste Management Coordination, Manolis Grafakos and the Head of the PPP Unit, Nikos Sergis.
