Athens and Thessaloniki voted to change mayors during Sunday's runoff local government elections, while candidates officially backed by ruling New Democracy lost in five of the six remaining regions.

PASOK-backed Haris Doukas scored a strong victory over incumbent mayor Kostas Bakoyannis in Athens.

“The city is turning a new page. The citizens have achieved the impossible,” Doukas said.

In Thessaloniki, independent Stelios Angeloudis led with 67,22% against the incumbent Konstantinos Zervas (44.06%), and 80% of votes counted.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis acknowledged “not a good night for New Democracy.”
