The European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde praised Greek economy’s turnaround, and the efforts of the Greek people following the years of debt crisis. 

Separately, Lagarde stated that the offer of Unicredit for acquiring a 9.0% stake in Alpha Bank is a “clear sign of confidence.”

In comments to State TV, Lagarde added that possibly there will be more after that, as the Greek banking sector has been transformed over time and should be certainly be of interest to investors to return to Greece.  

During the official dinner on the occasion of the ECB Governing Council meeting in Athens on 25-26 October, Lagarde said that Greece’s economy could serve as an exceptional example in very uncertain time and also as an example of the importance of being part of a common European policy. 

“It is not just the resilience of the Greek economy, it is also the resilience of the Greek people who remained committed to Europe through difficult times,” Lagarde said.
