The way is cleared for the signing of the construction contract for the extension of the Suburban Railway from Ano Liosia to Megara - a modern line with a length of 36 km - with METKA, a member of the Mytilineos Group, as the contractor.
Specifically, the Hellenic Court of Audit gave the green light for the budgeted project of €132.61 million to commence construction work. The project also includes an optional amount of €10.6 million for the construction of a line branch to the old Megara station.
Before the signatures, the Hellenic Parliament needs to be informed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and OSE (Hellenic Railways Organization) about the details of the contract.
It is worth noting that the duration of the contract is 28 months from its signing, and it is estimated that the project will be completed within the first half of 2026, provided that the signatures occur before 2024.
NEW RAILWAY LINE
The new suburban railway line, starting from Ano Liosia and terminating in Megara, will follow the alignment of the old meter-gauge line to the Peloponnese. It is expected to facilitate transportation to Elefsina and Megara, as well as the daily commutes of workers to major industrial facilities such as ELPE, Motoroil, Fulgor, and Sulphur. Specifically, there are planned stops at ELPE Aspropyrgos, Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, ELPE Elefsina, Loutropyrgos, Nea Peramos, Megara (SGYT), and, if construction progresses, at the Old Megara Suburban Railway Station.
