The initiation of a significant collaboration is marked by the signing today of the official agreements between the UNICEF Office in Greece and Piraeus Bank, aiming at the development of a program to strengthen child protection in the country.
An initiative that aims to enhance the cooperation of relevant authorities in cases of child abuse and neglect through the development of common child-centered procedures. Additionally, standardized tools will be developed to reinforce equal treatment for all children at risk through the design of a unified data collection system for children who are survivors of abuse and neglect. A system that will empower competent authorities in decision-making and policymaking to ensure a high level of protection for all children.
According to the Council of Europe and UNICEF, 1 in 8 children worldwide has experienced sexual abuse or exploitation at some point in their lives. In Europe, approximately 1 in 5 children is estimated to have experienced some form of sexual violence, and between 70 and 85% of children know their abuser. One-third of abused children never speak to anyone about their abuse.
While Greece has taken significant steps in recent years to address this serious issue, there remains a pressing need to establish a robust institutional framework for child protection against all forms of violence, with an emphasis on prevention through specialized child protection services.
"We are particularly pleased to join forces with Piraeus Bank, an organization with significant social contribution efforts and a track record demonstrating substantial investment in the protection and well-being of children through its initiatives. Children should feel safe at home, at school, and in their neighborhoods. Together, we aspire to contribute to strengthening the child protection system in Greece and creating a society where every child is secure to grow, develop, and thrive," stated Dr. Ghassan Khalil, UNICEF's Diplomatic Representative in Greece.
"It is a special honor and joy for us at Piraeus Bank to collaborate with the most iconic and globally active organization for children, undertaking joint actions in Greece with the aim of protecting them from all forms of violence and supporting their rights. These actions add significant value and depth to the comprehensive corporate social responsibility program we implement. Our commitment to Greek society is to work systematically for social progress and the well-being of all, without discrimination and exclusions that particularly affect our most vulnerable fellow citizens. The protection of children, as the highest social and institutional priority, is our duty and is at the core of our actions," stated Mr. Christos Megalou, CEO of Piraeus Bank.
