The 'Best Sovereign Risk Manager of the Year' award was conferred upon the Public Debt Management Agency (PDMA) by the specialized international electronic magazine Risk.net on November 28, 2023.

The award was granted for the successful and forward-looking risk management policy implemented by PDMA, primarily aimed at mitigating interest rate risk in an environment of globally rising interest rates. Specifically, it was recognized that through this strategy, PDMA ensured stability, predictability, and relatively low annual interest payments for an extended period, while other countries faced fiscal risks due to rising interest rates.

This award has been previously given to PDMA in 2018, and the selection of each winner involves extremely rigorous processes and evaluations among a large number of candidates, under conditions of intense international competition.

The Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kostis Hatzidakis, stated: "I congratulate the General Director of PDMA, Dimitris Tsakonas, the management, and the staff of the organization for this international distinction that reflects the high-level work being done in the field of public debt management. In a period where the international interest rate environment creates significant challenges for all countries worldwide, the performance of PDMA has direct, positive effects on reducing the cost of debt servicing borne by taxpayers. The government will continue the strategy that leads to the rapid de-escalation of debt as a percentage of GDP, freeing up resources for social policy and development."
