Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the violent sports incidents outside a sport arena on Thursday that resulted in the detention of 424 people (released Friday), and the serious injuries of three policemen, one of whom remains in intensive care. The incidents occurred during a Panathinaikos-Olympiacos volleyball game at the 'Melina Mercouri' sports arena in the Rentis neighborhood of Athens.
"Before delving into internal government activities, I want to make a reference to the criminal attack that the police faced during a volleyball match, resulting in the tragic injury of a police officer. There will be announcements tomorrow regarding fan violence, so I won't write much about it today. However, I want to express my anger over this incident and assure you that, as challenging as it may be to combat so-called fan violence, we will continue our efforts and struggle to prevail in this battle. Regardless of how influential those who incite or tolerate it might be. We owe it to the police officer fighting for his life, as well as to 'Alkis,' 'Michalis,' and all victims of fan violence. We owe it to the young people who want a healthy sports environment, and we owe it to society. Today, I want to ask you to join me in a prayer for this new person fighting for his life. After all, police officers are our children, risking their lives daily for everyone's safety," he emphasized.
