The Economist has crowned Greece as an economic 'champion,' placing it at the top of the list of 35 countries with the best economic performance for 2023, describing it as 'another unlikely triumph.'

According to The Economist's analysis, based on five economic and financial indicators (inflation, 'inflation breadth,' GDP, employment, and stock market performance), Greece maintains the highest scores in the economy among 35 major wealthy countries for the second consecutive year.

"At the top of the table, for the second consecutive year, is Greece – a remarkable result for an economy that was synonymous with mismanagement until recently. Apart from South Korea, many of the other standout performances are in America. The United States takes the third position. Canada and Chile are not far behind. Meanwhile, many of the 'laggards' are in Northern Europe, including the UK, Germany, Sweden, and Finland, with Finland being the last on the list," The Economist reports.

According to The Economist, Greece is achieving 'some astonishing results' across the five indicators that determine the overall score for each country. However, what stands out is the increase in the market value of the Greek stock exchange by 43.8%.

"For stellar stock performances, look thousands of miles west – to Greece. There, the real value of the stock market has increased by over 40%. Investors have once again shown interest in Greek companies as the government implements a series of market-friendly reforms." Referring extensively to the low economic performances of countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, as well as Finland, The Economist concludes regarding Greece's leadership: "While Finns who underperform can console themselves this Christmas by drowning their sorrows in a local tipple called 'päntsdrunk,' the rest of the world may want to raise a glass of ouzo to this unlikely champion."
