The direct contribution of tourism to the Greek GDP in 2022 is estimated to have reached €24 billion or 11.5%, with five regions representing almost 90% of the country's revenue.
These numbers reflect the resilience and dynamism of tourism, as 2022 marked the exit from the pandemic, despite some restrictions during the first few months, according to the annual research of the Institute for the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (INSETE).
The South Aegean with a 27% share of revenue, Crete with 21%, Attica with 17%, the Ionian Islands with 15%, and Central Macedonia with 9% together account for almost 90% of the revenue.
Based on the report's data, the majority of tourists in the country arrive by plane, followed by road arrivals, with very small percentages for ship and train travel. In fact, the trend in air arrivals has increased for the period from 2019 onwards, as their percentage has risen from 66% in 2019 to 76% in 2022, while it has decreased in the other categories: car from 31% in 2019 to 22% in 2022, ship from 3% in 2019 to 2% in 2022, and train from only 0.02% in 2019 to 0.01% in 2022.
