Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the small Dodecanese Island of Tilos on Monday, as the island’s municipality has been international hailed with a “Zero Waste Cities” certification.
The Prime Minister was informed by Thanasis Polychronopoulos, President of the Polygreen Group, which created the Centre, about the standard sorting and recycling practices that are applied, thanks to which the island has managed to achieve zero waste disposal and has received the Zero Waste Cities certification, protecting the environment and improving the lives of both residents and visitors.
“I want to congratulate you for this significant initiative, which creates an interesting institutional precedent, but I mainly want to underline the great importance I attach, and that the government as a whole attach, to innovative works that turn cyclical economy into reality,” Mr. Mitsotakis said.
The municipal program “Just Go Zero” garnered international praise of late by practically eliminating non-recyclable waste and kickstarting a small cyclical economy.
The island also employs a cutting-edge RES system for electricity supply, using a wind farm, solar panels and power storage battery cells. The Greek prime minister also toured the new archaeological museum on the island.
