Assets of €303.51 billion (from €312.55 billion in 2022), profitability of €3.62 billion, a 33% reduction in non-performing loans,, and a coverage ratio 25% higher than the European average were recorded by the four systemic banks in 2023, according to statistics from the European Central Bank's Single Supervisory Mechanism.

In particular, according to the data published by the Hellenic Banking Association:

NUMBER AND ASSETS

1. The number of systemic credit institutions (CIs) in the 19 EU Member States participating in the ECB's Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is 107 (110 in 2022).

2. Of the 107 systemic credit institutions, 4 are active in Greece. In terms of the number of systemic FIs, Greece follows large Eurozone countries (Germany: 22, Italy: 12, France: 11, Spain: 10, Netherlands, Austria, Ireland: 6, and Belgium: 5), but has a larger number of systemic FIs compared to the other 10 countries (Estonia, Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Luxembourg, Latvia: 3, Lithuania, Cyprus, Malta: 2, and Bulgaria: 1).

3. Each of the four systemic credit institutions in Greece has assets of more than €70 billion at group level, and their total assets amounted to €303.51 billion (2022: €312.55 billion).

PROFITABILITY

€164.75 billion for the 107 EU systemic credit institutions, of which €3.62 billion for the 4 systemic credit institutions in Greece.

Net fee and commission income as a percentage of total operating income:

- 28.2% for the 107 Systemic Credit Institutions,

- 16,2 % for the 4 systemic credit institutions in Greece.

Net interest income as a percentage of total operating income:

- 61.1% for the 107 systemic credit institutions,

- 78,5 % for the 4 systemic credit institutions in Greece.

For the 107 systemic credit institutions, there is an increase in the share of non-performing loans in their total loan portfolio (excluding cash at central banks) compared to 2022 (2.27%).

For the 107 systemic credit institutions, there is an increase in the share of NPLs in their total loan portfolio (taking into account liquid assets at central banks) compared to 2022 (1.84%).

For the 4 systemic credit institutions in Greece, there is a 33% reduction in the NPL ratio of their total loan portfolio (not taking into account liquid assets at central banks) compared to 2022 (6.02%).

For the 4 systemic credit institutions in Greece, there is a 27% reduction in the share of NPLs in their total loan portfolio (taking into account liquid assets at central banks) compared to 2022 (4.58%).
