The 6th Attica Group's environmental action was held on the island of Poros, on the occasion of World Earth Day, which is celebrated every year on April 22nd. The initiative, which was implemented from 4 to 7, created a positive environmental footprint on the island, with actions that contribute to the strengthening of environmental culture and at the same time demonstrate support for local communities through the activation of dozens of volunteers.
4 DAYS AND 111 VOLUNTEERS
Specifically, the 4-day outreach brought together 92 volunteers-employees of Attica Group, 19 volunteers of the NGO "Aegean Rebreath" and the team of the NGO "Agents of the Planet". The strong team of volunteers implemented actions with two main guidelines: Education & implementation of programs in schools: with the ultimate goal of forming habits that contribute to building a culture that supports a sustainable future, more than 280 students of all school levels in Poros participated in a series of experiential educational programs.
The educational programmes were implemented during the first 2 days of the outreach, by Aegean Rebreath and Planet Agents with the support and coordination of Attica Group. Environment & seabed cleaning: followed by a 2-day extensive cleaning of the seabed of Poros harbour.
During the cleaning of the sea area, the team of 111 volunteers of Attica Group and Aegean Rebreath, under the guidance of Aegean Rebreath, collected and sorted more than 3,000 recyclable items including plastics, vehicle tyres, metals, aluminium, glass, ceramics, etc. In addition to the importance of the practical contribution to the clean-up, the active participation, combined with the intense and vivid image of the process of collecting thousands of pieces of waste from the seabed, aims to raise awareness and further mobilize the younger generation and the island's inhabitants as a whole.
Attica Group's Executive Director of Management & Transformation and Head of the Responsible and Sustainable Development team, Mr. Panagiotis Papadodimos, said. Our presence in Poros contributes to the imperative priority of protecting the marine environment as well as to the promotion of the principles of the circular economy. At the same time, we foster the values of volunteerism among our more than 2,300 employees. We are proud of the particularly high and active participation of the Group's people in our activities, as reflected for many years in our published annual ESG reports."
