Aktor, a member of the Intrakat Group, today handed over to the Greek state the modern motorway Kalonis - Sigri of Lesvos at a special event held in Lesvos, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Christos Staikouras, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Nikos Tachias and the President and CEO of Aktor, Mr. Alexandros Exarchos. The new 46.7 km long motorway will not only offer more development prospects and faster and safer travel to the residents and visitors of Lesvos, but will also highlight the Petrified Forest of the island, a World Geological Heritage Site of international interest.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis thanked Aktor for the completion of the new motorway and expressed his wish that the company would demonstrate the same speed and consistency in the major project of the construction of the Tsiknia Dam and the water supply of Lesvos, in which the Intrakat Group subsidiary is the tenderer and will soon become the contractor.

The Kalonis-Sigris Motorway has been a priority project for us from the very first moment that the Intrakat Group acquired shareholding control of Aktor and, as was the case with other important projects of the company, such as the Thessaloniki Metro and the Patras-Pyrgos Motorway, we have reinforced it with human and material resources so that it can be delivered as soon as possible. Aktor has long experience and expertise in complex projects and can contribute with its strengths to the development and prosperity of Greece".

THE PROJECT

Actor, leading the consortium "Actor - Restoration SA", implemented the 46.7 km long and approximately €55 million budgeted project contract for the construction and upgrading of the Kalloni - Sigri road, a significant length (21 km) of which was carved on the old road, upgrading its characteristics and cross-section, while the remaining length (approximately 25.7 km) was entirely constructed with new sections. The project offers enhanced road safety and significantly reduces the time delay between Kalloni and Sigri, as it largely bypasses the old route, which passed through villages and settlements.

The new motorway also had to be redesigned in several places to protect and enhance the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a World Geological Heritage Site. As part of the project, important archaeological work was carried out, which identified thousands more finds from the Petrified Forest, most of which were brought to light in situ, creating a motorway-museum, unique in Europe. In addition, special areas were created on the motorway, offering a panoramic view of the island's rare natural environment.
