€1.7 billion new overdue debt in the first two months of the year

New overdue debts in the first two months of 2024 are increasing, according to the February Tax Administration bulletin of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue. 

Specifically, unpaid taxes amounted to €1.539 billion, while the number of debtors amounted to 3,878,712 individuals and legal entities. In total, in the first 2 months, the new overdue amount reached €1.736 billionn, while last year in the same period it had reached 1.484 billion euros, recording an increase of 17%.

The above debts result from a total of 3.878 million debtors, a marginal decrease compared to January. On the other hand, in terms of collections against new arrears (i.e., those created in the current year), revenues of €199 million were recorded in February, a significant improvement on the €€161 million recorded in February 2023.

It should be noted that the total amount of overdue debts to the tax authorities reaches 107.1 billion euros. Of these, €26.3 billion is considered uncollectible. As a result, the actual arrears balance is estimated at €80.8 billion.
