Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis

In the presence of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport presented the damage restoration plan from the extreme weather storms "Daniel" and "Elias" in Thessalia and Central Greece today in Mouzaki Karditsa.

After thanking all the citizens of Thessalia "for their patience and perseverance," Mitsotakis referred to the great importance of the project, which will exceed three billion euros.

"The total restoration of the damage will exceed 3 billion euros. The Prime Minister emphasized that the entire effort "obeyed a central rule: that no citizen of Thessaly, regardless of geographical isolation, should feel that the central state is not taking care of them." Of this, 1.4 billion will go toward road and rail infrastructure as well as the restoration of schools.

Mr. Mitsotakis then assured that roads will be rebuilt on better terms to cover even the most inaccessible corner of the region, noting that it was the recovery of the economy that made the funding possible:  "If the country had not been in a good fiscal situation, if our economy had not been growing, if we had not recovered the investment grade, if the cost of financing the Hellenic Republic had not fallen, it would have been very doubtful whether we could have secured that amount, which is so necessary to be channelled to the region."

He also added that in order to direct the resources to Thessalia, the government had to "deprive" them of other projects. Given the extent of Daniel's damage, however, giving Thessalia priority is absolutely necessary. He also emphasized the "European dimension of these resources."

The presentation was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Infrastructure, Nikos Tachiaos, and the Secretary General of Infrastructure, Konstantinos Magoulas, in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
